Dr. Joseph C. Atkinson is a leading expert in the theology of the domestic church. He has done extensive and ground-breaking research in the Biblical and theological foundations of the family’s role in salvation history. His book Biblical and Theological Foundations of the Family: The Domestic Church has recently been published by CUA Press (2014). He has written and lectured extensively (including Australia, Canada, India, and Ireland) and teaches on the Biblical structure of the family, hermeneutics, the Jewish background of the family, covenantal theology, and other topics. His published articles including: “Family As Domestic Church: Developmental Trajectory, Legitimacy, And Problems Of Appropriation,” and “Nuptiality as a Paradigmatic Structure of Biblical Revelation.”
He is the founder of the Theology of the Family Project (TheologyOfTheFamily.com) which seeks to help people gain the Biblical vision of the family and be open to God’s healing grace for their families. A key part of this program is the 13-part DVD series Biblical Vision of Marriage and Family which was produced in cooperation with EWTN. Dr. Atkinson has developed this into a complete parish-based program.
He is the Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture at the John Paul II Institute at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. and is the Executive Director of the Catholic Biblical Association.
He and his wife have been married 34 years and they have 6 children and one granddaughter.
